FAQ
What does Lan-Share do?
Lan-Share pairs two browsers with an 8-digit code so one device can send a file to another device without installing an app. It works phone to phone, phone to computer, and computer to computer.
Do I need an account or an app?
No. Public file transfer needs no account and no installation. Open the site on both devices, pair with the 8-digit code or QR code, and send.
Are files uploaded to Lan-Share storage?
File contents are not intentionally stored by the service. Lan-Share establishes a direct browser-to-browser WebRTC connection inside your local network; the server only serves the site, pairing rooms, and signaling.
Why does the receiver see file information before downloading?
The receiver should know what is being offered before accepting it. Lan-Share shows metadata first, and file bytes start transferring only after the receiver clicks download.
How long does an 8-digit code last?
Codes are short-lived. If a code expires, refresh the sender page to get a new code and share it again. Each code pairs exactly two devices.
How do I transfer files from phone to computer?
Open Lan-Share on both the phone and the computer, make sure they are on the same Wi-Fi or local network, enter the code from one device on the other, pick files, and download them on the receiving device.
Is there a file size limit?
Each session has a per-file limit, shown on the page (about 200 MB by default). Keep both pages open and the screens awake while large files transfer.
Why did pairing or transfer fail?
Common causes include expired codes, both devices not being online at the same time, VPN or proxy interference, guest Wi-Fi with client isolation, browser restrictions, or mobile backgrounding. Check that both devices share the same network, disable VPN, or use one phone's hotspot.
Is Lan-Share cloud storage?
No. Lan-Share is a short-lived 1-to-1 transfer tool, not a cloud drive, shared disk, or long-term file hosting service.
